About the Soap
What is cold process soap? Cold process soapmaking combines plant-based oils with sodium hydroxide (lye) to create soap through a natural chemical reaction called saponification. Unlike commercial soap, our bars retain all their natural glycerin, which deeply moisturizes the skin. Every bar cures for 4–5 weeks before it reaches your hands — that patience produces a harder, longer-lasting, gentler bar.
Why does my soap sometimes have a white on it? That's soap ash — a completely natural, cosmetic-only occurrence in handmade cold process soap. As the bar cures, its surface reacts with carbon dioxide in the air, forming a thin layer of sodium carbonate. It has nothing to do with quality or safety — it's simply a sign your soap was made the traditional way. It doesn't affect how the soap cleanses or feels on your skin. If you'd rather not see it, a quick wipe with a damp cloth or a few seconds under warm water will dissolve it instantly — but it's completely safe to use exactly as it arrives.
What's inside the bar? (And what's the difference between Ritual and Embodied?) It depends on which collection you're holding — the two are made to serve you differently.
Ritual bars (round) are layered. The outer bar is scented with an organic essential-oil blend chosen for its chakra. Nestled at the center is a smaller core soap, scented with a single essential oil — different from the surface, and unique to that chakra alone, so no two bars share the same inner scent. And held at the very heart of that core is your genuine gemstone on a natural hemp cord. As the outer bar wears down over the first weeks of use, the core surfaces, the scent shifts, and eventually the gemstone is freed — yours to keep and wear.
Embodied bars (rectangular) are the daily foundation — crystal-free, with no inner core and no gemstone. Same nourishing base, the same organic essential oils chosen for each chakra, without the reveal.
What's in your soap? Our base recipe uses organic olive oil, organic coconut oil, organic shea butter, organic castor oil, and a touch of sodium lactate — a natural mineral salt that hardens the bar and helps it last longer. Each chakra bar also contains a specific essential oil blend at the surface, a single complementary essential oil in the inner core, and a dried botanical aligned to its chakra. Full ingredient lists are on every product page.
Why does the scent seem soft in the box — will I smell it when I use it? Our bars are scented with organic essential oils alone — no synthetic fragrance, and no fixatives engineered to make a scent shout for months. Natural aromatics are gentler and more honest, and they settle quietly into the bar as it cures. The real magic happens under warm water: as you lather, steam and warmth awaken the essential oils and the scent blooms — usually far richer in the shower than a quiet sniff of the dry bar suggests. Keep your bar dry between uses, and let it come alive when you do.
Why does the scent change as I use it? The outer bar carries a layered essential oil blend chosen to open the chakra at the surface. Inside, a smaller core soap is scented with one complementary oil, unique to that specific chakra — no two chakras share a core scent. As you wash and the outer layers wear away, you reach the core — and a new scent begins to come through. It's not a defect; it's the bar's design. Two scents, two depths, surface to source.
Why do you use essential oils instead of synthetic fragrance? Because as above, so below starts with what goes into the bar. Synthetic fragrances can smell louder and last longer, but they lean on fixatives and lab-made compounds we'd rather keep off your skin. We choose organic essential oils — each one selected for its traditional alignment with the chakra it serves — so the scent is honest, the ingredients are clean, and the experience is a true botanical one. Softer by nature, and richer under water.
Will the scent stay on my skin all day? Think of it as a ritual, not a perfume. The aroma blooms while you wash and rinse clean, leaving your skin fresh rather than fragranced — the way nature intended. If you'd like the scent to linger, layer it with an unscented moisturizer to seal in that just-showered calm.
Is your soap organic?
Our base oils, shea butter, and essential oils are certified organic, with two exceptions: benzoin absolute (in the Crown blend) and rosemary oleoresin extract (a natural stabilizer used across all bars) — both natural, not synthetic. We don't label the soap itself as organic because not every single ingredient carries that certification, but the vast majority of what touches your skin is organically sourced. Check each product page for the full list.
Is your soap vegan?
Our current Chakra Collection is 100% plant-based — no animal fats, no animal testing, no animal-derived ingredients. Future collections or limited editions may explore other nourishing ingredients. Every product page lists the full ingredient list, so you always know exactly what's in your bar.
How long does a bar last? With normal use, a bar lasts 3–4 weeks. To extend its life, keep it on a draining soap dish between uses and allow it to dry fully between showers.
What is the net weight? Each bar is approximately 3.0 oz (85g) after curing — this includes the outer bar plus the embedded core soap with crystal.
About the Crystals
Are the crystals real? Yes. Every bar contains a genuine gemstone — not glass, not resin, not synthetic. Each stone is hand-selected for its quality and energetic alignment with the chakra it serves.
How does the crystal work with the soap? The crystal sits on a natural hemp cord set at the heart of an inner core soap embedded within the bar. As you bathe, the outer bar wears thin, and the core surfaces — and the stone is gradually revealed. Once fully uncovered, the cord is long enough to wear or place wherever your intention lives. The stone is yours to keep.
When will the gemstone come out? It depends on how often you use the bar and how much you lather. Most seekers reach the gemstone somewhere between week three and week six of regular daily use. Once it's released, it's yours to keep — a small keepsake from the bar that revealed it, to hold onto however feels right to you.
Is the crystal safe in soap? Absolutely. The gemstones we use are non-porous and inert — they don't react with the soap or release anything into it. The hemp cord is 100% natural with no dyes or synthetic fibers.
Can I choose which crystal I get? Each chakra bar comes with a specific crystal aligned to that chakra. The crystal is part of the intention, not a random surprise. Check the product page or our Crystals page to see which stone comes with each bar.
Will my crystal and necklace look exactly like the photos? Not exactly — and that's part of the magic. Each Ritual soap cradles a genuine crystal on a natural hemp cord, finished with accent beads we source in small batches. Because those beads come and go, the accents may vary slightly from what you see online. Every necklace is one of a kind, so the one that arrives is uniquely yours — a small reminder that no two rituals are ever quite the same.
About the Chakras
Do I need to believe in chakras for the soap to work? Not at all. The soap nourishes your skin regardless of what you believe. The chakra alignment is an invitation, not a requirement. If the scent grounds you, the botanical soothes you, and the ritual of slowing down feels good — that's enough.
Which chakra should I start with? Start where you feel called. If you're not sure, the Root Chakra is a natural beginning — it's about grounding and stability, which supports everything else. Or take the full journey and work through all seven.
What's the difference between the different offerings?
The Grounding Offering includes the three lower chakra bars (Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus) — focused on stability, creativity, and confidence. The Awakening Offering includes the three upper chakra bars (Throat, Third Eye, Crown) — focused on expression, intuition, and connection. The Expansion Offering bridges the middle (Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat) — where personal power opens into love and finds its voice. My Journey lets you choose your own three bars from the collection, whichever combination speaks to you. The Full Journey includes all seven. All five offerings are built from our Ritual bars — Embodied bars are sold individually and aren't available as part of a set.

Ingredients & Safety
Is your soap safe for sensitive skin? Our soaps are formulated to be gentle, but everyone's skin is different. If you have known sensitivities to specific essential oils or botanicals, please check the ingredient list on each product page before purchasing. If you're unsure, we recommend starting with the Crown Chakra bar — its frankincense, atlas cedar, and benzoin blend with tulsi leaf is contemplative and gently warming.
Do your soaps contain allergens? Our soaps contain tree nut oils (coconut oil) and may contain traces of other botanical materials. Full ingredient lists are available on every product page. If you have a specific allergy concern, please email us at hello@asabovesoapbelow.com before ordering.
Are your essential oils safe? All essential oils are used at safe percentages for rinse-off products. We follow established soap formulation guidelines for essential oil usage rates.
